Map of Kulmbach

Kulmbach is a brewing town in Upper Franconia, in northern Bavaria, below the Plassenburg castle. Its beer festival, the Kulmbacher Bierwoche, has its site published by the Kulmbacher Brauerei. The 76th edition is set for 31 July to 8 August 2027.

Practical notes

  • According to the festival, the Stadl at EKU-Platz, the heart of the grounds, is an 8 to 10 minute walk from Kulmbach station.
  • Bayreuth lies to the south-east.

The festival grounds

The Bierwoche is held at EKU-Platz, in the town centre. The square is named after the Erste Kulmbacher Actienbrauerei, one of the town’s historic breweries, and the festival tent, the Stadl, has stood there since 2018.

What to see, eat and drink in Kulmbach

The Plassenburg, the castle above the town, houses a museum of tin figures, and the Mönchshof houses a Bavarian brewery museum. Upper Franconia is a land of village breweries and beer cellars, and its cooking matches: grilled bratwurst, roast pork with dumplings, pretzels.

Getting there and where to stay

Regional trains serve Kulmbach station, with connections towards Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg, whose airport is the nearest large one. By car, the A70 motorway passes the town. Kulmbach has hotels and guesthouses in the old town. Bayreuth is close too. Its Wagner festival runs from late July through August, at the same time as the Bierwoche.
