Wine

Wine festivals and winery visits run through most of the year, with harvest fairs in autumn, auction weekends in November and village festivals in winter.

Burgundy shows the range: the Saint-Vincent Tournante moves to a different village each year at the end of January, and the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction fills Beaune for a weekend in November. In summer, Bordeaux Fête le Vin sets up on the quays of the Garonne in July, and German wine towns such as Mainz and Bad Dürkheim hold their wine fairs in late August and September. The Logroño San Mateo festival in Rioja celebrates the harvest with grape treading. Between festivals, winery visits in the Napa Valley, the Douro Valley or Rioja make a trip on their own. Book weekend tours ahead and decide who drives.
