Fruits & vegetables
Harvest festivals celebrate one crop in the town that grows it, with parades, stalls and dishes built around it, often at the time it comes in.
Summer is the main season here. The National Cherry Festival fills Traverse City, Michigan, for eight days in early July, and most of its events are free. The Gilroy Garlic Festival follows in late July in California, with garlic dishes and cooking demonstrations. The Hatch Chile Festival in New Mexico takes place on Labor Day weekend, at the start of September. These are small towns, and rooms close to the festival can be scarce on its dates: book as soon as the next edition is announced, or stay in a larger town nearby and drive in.
