What to taste in Wiesbaden
Rheingau Riesling
The grape of the wine region west of the city, poured at the Wine Week booths around the Marktkirche.
Sekt (sparkling wine)
Rheingau sparkling wine, on the Wine Week lists beside the still wines.
Spring water
At the Wine Week, the ESWE water station pours free water from various Wiesbaden springs.
Each August, Wiesbaden turns the squares between its City Hall, the Marktkirche and the palace into what the city calls “the longest wine bar in the world”: the Rheingau Wine Week, held since 1976. The state capital of Hesse lies on the right bank of the Rhine, facing Mainz across the river.
Wiesbaden, a spa town on the Rhine
Wiesbaden is a spa town. Its Kurhaus, the spa’s assembly hall, also names a bus stop.
- Kurhaus: the bus stop Kurhaus/Theater, lines 1, 8 and 16, is the one the city gives for the Wine Week.
- The springs: at the Wine Week, the ESWE water station serves water from several of the city’s springs.
- 26 hot springs: at up to 67 °C, among the hottest in Europe, says the city. The Kochbrunnen is the hottest of them.
- Roman roots: the Romans founded the settlement of Aquae Mattiacorum, with its baths, between AD 6 and 16. The inscription “Aquis Mattiacis” on the Kurhaus recalls it.
- Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme: an Art Nouveau bathhouse fed by the Adlerquelle spring, where bathing is textile-free.
Rheingau vineyards at the city edge
The vineyards of the Rheingau begin at the western edge of the city and follow the river.
The Wine Week lets you taste the region without a car: the winemakers come into town for ten days.
