Map of South Africa
South Africa’s main wine country is the Cape Winelands, inland from Cape Town in the Western Cape. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, two of its valleys, are the destinations of this guide in the country.
Estate tastings there cost 60 to 220 rand per adult at the two estates compared, Leopard’s Leap and Rickety Bridge, where prices are confirmed. The Franschhoek Wine Tram links several farms by tram and open-air bus, which solves the question of who drives. Its hop-on hop-off ticket, at 350 rand, covers transport, with tastings paid at each estate. Its all-inclusive day, open to adults, costs 1,900 rand. At Leopard’s Leap a wine-only tasting starts at 60 rand, and Rickety Bridge pours eight single-variety wines for 220 rand, and also runs a wine blending workshop at 600 rand.
In Stellenbosch, estate tastings cost 70 to 200 rand per adult, and Jordan’s guided Cellar Tour, with five wines, 249 rand.
Getting there
Cape Town International Airport is the gateway. Franschhoek lies inland, east of the city. Seasons are reversed: harvest falls in late summer, roughly February and March.
