Map of Telluride
Telluride is a small town in San Miguel County, in the San Juan Mountains of south-west Colorado. A former mining town, it lies in a box canyon at the head of the San Miguel River, at about 8,750 feet (2,670 m), with ski slopes above it and Mountain Village, a resort on the ridge, linked to the centre by a free gondola.
The town’s event in this guide is the Telluride Mushroom Festival, run by the Telluride Institute, a non-profit. In 2026 its 46th edition ran from 12 to 16 August, with vendors in the parks and streets of the centre. The 2027 dates had not been published on 6 October 2026.
Practical notes
- Montrose Regional Airport, to the north, is the usual gateway. Telluride’s own airport is small.
- The centre is compact and walkable, and the gondola to Mountain Village costs nothing.
- Summer afternoons in the San Juans can turn stormy: plan walks in the hills for the morning.
