Map of Hatch
Hatch is a village in Doña Ana County, in southern New Mexico, on the Rio Grande. The farms of the Hatch Valley around it grow the chile peppers that carry the village’s name across the United States. In late summer, the harvest is roasted in rotating drum roasters by the roadside, and the smell of roasting chile is part of the season.
The Hatch Chile Festival, run by the Hatch Valley Chamber of Commerce, began in 1971 as a gathering of local farmers, according to the festival. In 2026 it was held on Labor Day weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September. The 2027 dates had not been published on 6 October 2026.
Practical notes
- Hatch is just off Interstate 25. Las Cruces, the nearest large city, is to the south-east.
- El Paso International Airport and Albuquerque’s airport are reached by road.
- The village is small: for a festival weekend, Las Cruces has the wider choice of hotels.
