Map of Pokolbin

Pokolbin is the heart of the Hunter Valley’s wine country, just over two hours north of Sydney. It is less a town than a district of vineyards, cellar doors and places to stay, laid out along a few country roads.

The four cellar doors in this guide are all there: Tamburlaine Organic Wines and Ben Ean on McDonalds Road, Iron Gate Estate on Oakey Creek Road, and Peterson House at the corner of Broke Road and Wine Country Drive. A tasting costs 10 to 20 Australian dollars per adult. Tamburlaine’s guided vineyard and winery tour costs 75 dollars. Harvest runs from January to March. There is no train to Pokolbin: drive from Sydney or book a tour with transport.

Practical notes

  • The Hunter is known for Semillon and Shiraz. Peterson House pours sparkling wines.
  • Tamburlaine offers a tasting of non-alcoholic wines, useful for the driver.
  • The legal drinking age in Australia is 18.
