Australia’s wine regions in this guide are spread across four states. In South Australia, the Barossa Valley is known for Shiraz. In New South Wales, the Hunter Valley is known for Semillon and Shiraz. In Western Australia, Margaret River is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In Victoria, the Yarra Valley is known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The usual way to visit is the cellar door, a winery’s tasting room. Tastings start at 10 Australian dollars in the Barossa and the Hunter Valley, and at 15 dollars in Margaret River and the Yarra Valley. Guided winery tours are rarer. This guide lists one in the Hunter Valley (75 dollars), one in Margaret River (50 dollars) and two in the Yarra Valley (from 55 dollars).

The guide also covers three food festivals: Tasting Australia, in Adelaide and across South Australia, from 30 April to 9 May in 2027, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, in Victoria, held from 20 to 29 March in 2026, and, in Tasmania, Hobart’s Taste of Summer, from 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 on Princes Wharf No. 1.

Good to know

  • The legal drinking age in Australia is 18.
  • Seasons are reversed: harvest falls between January and April, depending on the region.
  • Distances are long: each region is a separate trip from its state capital (Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne).
