Map of Adelaide

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is laid out on a grid around Victoria Square, also known by its Kaurna name, Tarntanyangga, between Gulf St Vincent and the Adelaide Hills. Tasting Australia, the state’s festival of eating and drinking, runs from 30 April to 9 May 2027, with a free hub, Town Square, and events in Adelaide and across the regions.

Practical notes

  • Adelaide Airport is west of the city centre.
  • April and May are autumn in Australia.

Wine country nearby

The Barossa Valley, 50 to 60 minutes by car north-east, has the cellar doors listed in this guide, Peter Lehmann, Barossa Valley Estate and Jacob’s Creek, with tastings from 10 Australian dollars.

What to eat and drink in Adelaide

The Adelaide Central Market, a covered food market a block west of Victoria Square, gathers South Australian produce. Among the state’s wine regions are the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale, with the Barossa and the Clare Valley further north. On menus, look for Coffin Bay oysters, Spencer Gulf prawns and King George whiting.

Where to stay

The city centre, around Victoria Square and the streets north of it, is the practical base for events in Adelaide. Glenelg, the beach suburb at the end of the tram line, is the seaside alternative.
