Camogli is a fishing village on the Ligurian coast, east of Genoa at the start of the Portofino promontory, known for the tall painted houses along its harbour and for a frying pan: the giant steel pan of the Sagra del Pesce, in use since 2001.
The harbour and its festival
The fish festival began in 1952, on the feast of San Fortunato, patron saint of fishermen, and still fills the harbour square each May.
The abbey of San Fruttuoso, whose name the station shares, lies on the Portofino promontory and is usually reached by boat or on foot.
Cheese focaccia under an IGP
Camogli is one of the four places where the Focaccia di Recco col formaggio IGP is made, with Recco, Sori and Avegno, the territory of origin where its consortium invites visitors to eat it. Its production rules leave little room:
- Dough: soft wheat flour, Italian extra virgin olive oil, water and salt, filled with fresh cheese.
- Oven: 270 to 320 °C for 4 to 8 minutes, until the top turns golden with brown bubbles or streaks.
- Never: pre-baked, frozen or preserved in any other way.
“Era la Pentecoste di rose dell’anno 1189…”: the consortium quotes the historian Simonetta Duodo Valenziano, who places a cheese-filled focaccia on the tables of San Fruttuoso abbey as Ligurian crusaders left for the Holy Land.
