Map of Abergavenny

Abergavenny is a market town in Monmouthshire, in south-east Wales, on the River Usk. Hills surround it, among them the Sugar Loaf, and the town sits at the south-eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, now known by its Welsh name, Bannau Brycheiniog. In the centre stand a Victorian market hall and the ruins of a Norman castle.

Once a year the town hosts the Abergavenny Food Festival, which fills venues across its centre. In 2026 it was held on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September. Tourist boards describe it as a festival of the third weekend of September. The 2027 dates had not been published on 6 October 2026.

Practical notes

  • The railway station is a short walk south-east of the centre, with direct trains to Cardiff and Hereford.
  • The town is small and walkable: the festival venues are in its centre.
  • The festival weekend fills the town: look for a room early, in Abergavenny or in the Monmouthshire villages around it.
