Map of South Carolina
South Carolina, on the Atlantic coast of the American South, has a coastal plain called the Lowcountry, with its own cooking built on rice, shrimp and crab. Its festival in this guide is Charleston Wine + Food, set for 3 to 7 March 2027.
What to eat and drink
Lowcountry cooking is the cooking of the coast around Charleston and down to Savannah: shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, red rice, the Lowcountry boil of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes, and benne wafers, thin sesame cookies. Rice, once grown on the plantations of the coast, is at its root. In the cooler months, oyster roasts gather friends around steamed oysters.
Getting to South Carolina
Charleston International Airport, in North Charleston, serves the coast. Interstate 26 links Charleston with Columbia, the state capital, inland, and Interstate 95 runs north to south through the state.
Where to stay
For the festival, Charleston’s historic peninsula and Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River, are the bases.
