Map of Charleston
Charleston, settled by the English in 1670, stands on a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, with a historic centre of pastel houses and church spires. Its kitchen is Lowcountry cooking: shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, rice dishes. In 2027 Charleston Wine + Food runs from 3 to 7 March, with events on the peninsula and elsewhere in the area, such as North Charleston.
Practical notes
- Charleston International Airport is in North Charleston, north of the peninsula.
- The historic centre is walkable. A car or taxi helps for events outside it.
Festival timing
The organisers of Charleston Wine + Food say it is held the first full weekend in March. Three days before its 2027 edition opens, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival ends in Miami Beach.
What to eat in Charleston
Shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, red rice and benne wafers are the Lowcountry classics, and March falls in the oyster season, the time of oyster roasts. King Street, the main shopping street of the peninsula, is lined with restaurants and bars.
Food tours
Four operators run guided food tours in the historic centre, from 75 to 119.99 dollars per adult (October 2026):
- The Charleston Food Tour, daily at 11 am, about 2 hours.
- Charleston Culinary Tours, 2.5 hours downtown.
- Secret Food Tours in the French Quarter and Revelry Tours, both from the U.S. Custom House on East Bay Street.
Where to stay
The historic district puts you on foot from its restaurants. Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River, and North Charleston, near the airport, are other bases.
