Two dishes with a Berlin date
- Currywurst: Herta Heuwer created her sauce on 4 September 1949 at her snack stand in Charlottenburg. A plaque has marked the spot, Kantstraße 101 at the corner of Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, since 2003.
- Döner: the döner as it is eaten today is said to have been invented in Berlin, where the city’s tourism site credits Kadir Nurman with first putting the meat in pita bread, in 1972.
Street food beyond the tours
Berlin has two weekly street food markets that fit around a tour.
- Street Food Thursday: every Thursday from 5 pm to 10 pm at Markthalle Neun, in Kreuzberg, free to enter. The hall opened on 1 October 1891, one of the 14 market halls the city built by 1892.
