Viktualienmarkt food tour

A food tour of the Viktualienmarkt is a guided walk through Munich’s central food market, with tastings along the way. Five operators publish an adult price for a public tour, from 39 to 100 euros, for 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The choice comes down to two formats: a short tasting walk of about two hours, or a longer food tour in English that takes in the old town around the market.

The market itself moved to its present site in 1807 and trades from Monday to Saturday, according to the City of Munich.

Short tasting walk or long food tour

• The short walks last 1.5 to 2 hours. Adwoto and Servus Bavaria run theirs in German, for 39 and 42 euros. Stadtvogel charges 49 euros and does not state a language. Adwoto’s tour lists five tastings in the market and takes 2 to 21 participants. Stadtvogel warns that its portions are generous and suggests bringing a small bottle of water. You pay in cash on the spot or with an online ticket.
• The English-language tours cost 94.99 and 100 euros and last about three hours, in small groups: 12 people at most with Secret Food Tours, 8 guests with Fork & Walk. Secret Food Tours makes seven stops in the old town, grazing through the market before a board of local cheeses. Fork & Walk’s 100 euros is its starting price for one adult in low season. The price can be higher in high season.

Prices to read with care

• Stadtvogel also has an older mini-site that shows 44 euros and about 1.5 hours. Its main site, where the tour is booked, shows 49 euros and 2 hours: that price is used here.
• BlackBook Tours runs Lunch Like A Local, which it calls the ORIGINAL Viktualienmarkt Food Tour PLUS, in English, from 11 am at the doors of the Ludwig Beck store (Marienplatz station, exit C). Its page shows “from 111.11 euros” without naming an adult price, and its tours admit children: it is left out of the price range above. Tips for the guide are not included.

Practical tips for Viktualienmarkt food tour

• Pick the language first. Of the five tours in the table, two run in English and two in German. Stadtvogel does not state a language.
• Mind the calendar. The market has no trading on Sundays, Servus Bavaria’s open tour runs on Fridays, and Fork & Walk’s on four days a week.
• With children. Servus Bavaria and Stadtvogel publish child prices. Ask the other operators before booking.
• Getting there. Marienplatz, on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, is a few minutes’ walk from the market, and the Isartor has its own S-Bahn stop.
• Dietary needs. Tastings differ by operator: Adwoto lists five samples in the market, Secret Food Tours a board of local cheeses. Ask what is included before booking if you are vegetarian or have an allergy.
