At a glance

  • Munich’s spring festival on the Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest ground
  • Free entry to the grounds and the tents. Rides, food and drink are paid
  • Two big tents: Augustiner in the Festhalle Bayernland, Spaten in the Hippodrom
  • A wheat beer garden for a half-litre in fine weather
  • Usually a little over two weeks, three in 2026, its 60th year

How the festival runs

What to taste

  • Augustiner beer

Poured in the Festhalle Bayernland, run by the Schöniger family of landlords.

  • Spaten beer

Poured in the Hippodrom, a former Oktoberfest tent, run by the Krätz family.

  • Weißbier by the Halbe

A half-litre of wheat beer in the Weißbiergarten, open in fine weather, with Bavarian Schmankerl.

  • Bavarian Schmankerl

The Bavarian word for hearty snacks and dishes, sold in the tents and at the stalls. Roast chicken and pretzels are the classics of a Munich beer tent.

The Münchner Frühlingsfest, Munich’s spring festival, sets up on the Theresienwiese, the same ground as Oktoberfest, but on its northern part only. In 2026 it celebrated its 60th anniversary and, exceptionally, lasted three weeks, from 17 April to 10 May. It usually lasts a little over two weeks. For 2027, the City of Munich’s portal says only that the date will be announced.

Two tents and a wheat beer garden

The beer is poured in two large tents and a garden, among rides, stalls and a family programme.

The city counts more than 100 showmen in 2026, with festival tents, rides, stalls, Schmankerl and a family programme.

The Munich Frühlingsfest next to Oktoberfest

The ground, the breweries and the Bavarian food are familiar from Oktoberfest, but there are two tents rather than a full festival city, and the city presents a programme for the whole family.

The usual programme adds one of Bavaria’s largest flea markets, held on the Theresienwiese, according to the city’s portal.

Munich around the festival

  • Viktualienmarkt: the central food market in the old town.
  • Nockherberg: the strong beer season, at the end of winter.

Before you go

  • Dates: the 2027 dates had not been announced on 14 October 2026. The festival is held in April and May.
  • Tables: entry to the tents is free, and reservations are made on each tent’s website.
  • Budget: entry costs nothing. Rides, food and drinks are extra.
  • Getting there: U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese, U3 or U6 to Goetheplatz, S-Bahn to Hackerbrücke, or tram 18 or 19 to Hermann-Lingg-Straße.
  • Weather: the wheat beer garden opens in fine weather. In spring, the tents are the fallback.
  • Where: only the northern part of the Theresienwiese is used, so the ground feels smaller than at Oktoberfest.
