How the festival runs

What to taste

  • Isle of Wight garlic

Grown at Newchurch by The Garlic Farm. At the festival “you’ll find it everywhere, to eat, drink and buy”.

  • Garlic stalls

Producers and food vendors sell garlic dishes and garlic to take home.

  • Theatre Kitchen

One of the festival stages, with the Main Stage and the Grass Arena. The running order is published the week before.

  • Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food

The organiser invites vendors for each of these diets and publishes the food list on social media once they confirm.

  • The Tiny Tea Tent

A trader with a large marquee of tables and chairs, for a sit-down break.

The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival has been held on the third weekend in August every year since 1983, in a field at Fighting Cocks Crossroads, just outside Newchurch. Its slogan: “Eat, drink, STINK.”

Garlic from the farm next door

“At the heart of the festival is of course Britain’s most loved and pungent bulb, garlic! Grown right here on the Isle of Wight, in Newchurch by the multi award-winning Garlic Farm”, says the organiser.

Garlic turns up in every form, the organiser promises.

  • To eat, drink and buy: dishes, drinks and bulbs on the stalls.
  • To play: garlic characters and garlic games.
  • To meet: the Garlic Queen, “beautiful, if slightly pungent”.

The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival, a family show around one bulb

The festival calls itself “the Island’s Biggest Summer Show”, and it is built for a full family day. It hosts star chefs, musicians, local charities and businesses, and the County Press lists arts and crafts, catering, face painting and funfair attractions.

  • Stages: Main Stage, Grass Arena, Theatre Kitchen and Camp Garlic.
  • For children: activities all day, and a dog show on the programme.

The organiser describes the festival as smaller than average, so families can relax without worrying about overcrowding or children getting lost.

Ferry offers with the ticket
