Map of Melbourne

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, on the Yarra River where it reaches Port Phillip Bay. Its food scene draws on the waves of migration that shaped the city: Italian cafés in Carlton, Vietnamese restaurants along Victoria Street in Richmond, Greek and Chinese neighbourhoods in and around the centre. Coffee is a serious matter here, and the city-centre laneways are lined with small cafés and bars. The Queen Victoria Market, on the north side of the centre, is the city’s large historic market.

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival spreads its events across the city. In 2026 it ran from 20 to 29 March, and one of its events, the World’s Longest Lunch, set a 600-metre table through Kings Domain, the gardens by the Yarra. Dates for 2027 had not been published on 6 October 2026.

Practical notes

  • Federation Square, opposite Flinders Street station, is the usual central landmark.
  • Trams are free inside the central city zone. Beyond it, you pay a fare.
  • SkyBus coaches link Melbourne Airport with Southern Cross station.
