Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in east-central France, runs from the Massif Central to the Alps, with Lyon as its capital. North of Lyon, the Beaujolais hills are wine country: the red wines of Beaujolais are made mainly from the Gamay grape, and the region is known abroad for its young wine, Beaujolais Nouveau.

The festival that celebrates that new wine in this guide is Les Sarmentelles, in the village of Beaujeu, from 18 to 22 November 2026, with a free wine fair over the weekend and a paid tasting trail on the opening Wednesday. In Lyon itself, the Lyon Street Food Festival is held in June: its 11th edition is set for 10 to 13 June 2027.

Getting there

Lyon has an international airport and TGV links with Paris. The Beaujolais villages lie off the main railway lines, so plan on a car, and on a driver who stays off the tastings.
