Map of Bologna

Bologna is the capital of Emilia-Romagna, with a medieval centre of porticoed streets around Piazza Maggiore. Next to the square, the narrow lanes of the Quadrilatero hold food shops and market stalls, and the city’s two leaning towers stand at Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, a few steps away.

Mortadella is the city’s best-known cold cut, sold as Mortadella di Bologna, and Bologna is the home of tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù. Four food tour operators are compared in this guide. Eating Europe leaves in the morning from Piazza Re Enzo, from 69 euros per adult. Secret Food Tours runs an Express tour of the Quadrilatero, two to two and a half hours, for 69.99 euros. Delicious Bologna and Taste Bologna start in the late afternoon, for 75 and 89 euros.

Practical notes

  • Bologna Centrale station is on the high-speed line between Milan, Florence and Rome.
  • The Marconi Express monorail links the airport with the station.
  • The old centre is compact: the tours start within a short walk of Piazza Maggiore.
