Map of Greve in Chianti
Greve in Chianti is a market town in the Chianti Classico hills, on the road that links Florence and Siena through the vineyards. It is a convenient base for the wineries of the area, which are spread across several municipalities: Rocca delle Macìe and Castello di Fonterutoli are in Castellina in Chianti, Antinori nel Chianti Classico is at Bargino in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, and Fattoria Casa Sola is in Barberino Tavarnelle.
Chianti Classico is a red wine made mainly from Sangiovese. A tasting at the wineries in this guide costs 15 to 45 euros per adult, and a cellar tour with tasting 25 to 50 euros.
Practical notes
- Florence has the nearest airport. Pisa’s is larger.
- A car is the practical way to move between wineries, with a driver who skips the tastings.
- Harvest, in September and October, is the busiest time on the estates.
