What to taste in Venice

  • Cicchetti

Small bites at the counter of a bacaro.

  • Ombra

A small glass of wine, the Venetian companion to cicchetti.

  • Sarde in saor

Fried sardines in a sweet and sour onion marinade.

  • Spritz

The Venetian aperitif of white wine, bitter liqueur and soda.

Venice eats standing up at the counter: its bacari, the old wine bars, serve cicchetti, small bites taken with an ombra, a small glass of wine. Two operators publish an adult price for a guided food tour of them, 79 and 99.99 euros, and a third sells a guide-only cicchetti tour.

Where the Venice tours go

  • San Polo and the Rialto: the market district by the Grand Canal, on Eating Europe’s route. Its tour meets at Campo San Giacomo.
  • Cannaregio: the northern district, where Secret Food Tours meets in front of the old Teatro Italia, now a supermarket.
  • San Marco and Castello: on Eating Europe’s route too.

Cook in Venice starts its cicchetti tour near Piazzale Roma, the bus and car terminal at the edge of the city.

On the counter

  • Baccalà mantecato: whipped salt cod on bread or polenta.
  • Fegato alla veneziana: calf’s liver cooked slowly with onions, a dish of the city’s trattorie.
  • Risotto: on the menu of Eating Europe’s Greatest Hits tour, with other classic dishes.

San Polo, Cannaregio or Mestre: where to sleep

  • San Polo and Santa Croce: between the station and the Rialto, close to the market and its bacari.
  • Cannaregio: the northern district, quieter, with canalside bars. Secret Food Tours meets here.
  • Mestre: on the mainland, cheaper, linked to the island by train and tram.

Before you go

  • Getting around: on foot and by vaporetto, the water bus. There are no cars in the historic centre.
  • Arriving: Venezia Santa Lucia station, Marco Polo airport, on the mainland.
  • Tour departures: Eating Europe Monday to Saturday at 11:15 am and 4:30 pm, Cook in Venice at 5 pm near Piazzale Roma.
  • Group size: 10 people at most on both Eating Europe’s and Secret Food Tours’ tours.
  • Footwear: bridges and steps all the way. Wear comfortable shoes.
