Map of Osaka

Osaka is Japan’s third-largest city, on Osaka Bay in the Kansai region, and has long been called the nation’s kitchen. Its local saying, kuidaore, means roughly “eat until you drop”. Takoyaki, balls of batter filled with octopus, and okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake cooked on a griddle, are the city’s signature street foods. Shinsekai, around the Tsutenkaku tower, is known for kushikatsu, fried skewers.

Four operators are compared in this guide. In yen, Hungry Osaka Tours charges 13,000 yen per person for its Shinsekai group tour and Arigato Travel from 25,300 yen per adult for its Dotonbori tour. Secret Food Tours and Ninja Food Tours price their tours in US dollars. All last 3 to 3.5 hours.

Practical notes

  • Kansai International Airport is on an island in Osaka Bay, linked to the city by train.
  • Shinkansen trains stop at Shin-Osaka. The Midosuji subway line runs from there to Umeda and Namba.
  • Tokyo’s food tours are less than two and a half hours away by Nozomi Shinkansen.
