Map of Mexico
Mexican cuisine is on UNESCO’s list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, built on corn, beans and chillies, and on cooking traditions that vary from one region to the next. The country runs from the deserts of the north to the Yucatán peninsula, with Mexico City, the capital, on the high central plateau.
The experiences in this guide are in two places. In Mexico City, five operators run food tours. Four of them price in US dollars, from 74.99 dollars per person with Secret Food Tours to 140 dollars per adult with Culinary Backstreets, for 3 to 5 hours. Food Hood Tours prices in pesos. In the town of Tequila, in the western state of Jalisco, Jose Cuervo and Casa Sauza run distillery tours with tastings, for 340 to 585 pesos.
Getting around
Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport is the country’s main hub, with domestic flights across the country. The peso is the national currency. In the capital, the food tours in this guide start in the Centro Histórico, Roma, Condesa and Coyoacán. Tequila is reached from Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, which has its own international airport.
