Map of Napa

Napa is the main town at the southern end of the Napa Valley, north of San Francisco Bay, and the usual gateway to the valley’s wineries. The Carneros district lies just south. The four wineries compared in this guide are spread along the valley: Domaine Carneros in Carneros, Robert Mondavi in Oakville, Beringer in St. Helena and Sterling Vineyards in Calistoga, at the northern end.

A seated or self-guided tasting costs 35 to 60 dollars per adult there, and a guided tour with tasting 35 to 85 dollars. Tastings last about an hour, and the guided tours 30 to 90 minutes.

Practical notes

  • Highway 29 runs up the valley from Napa to Calistoga. The Silverado Trail follows the eastern side.
  • The legal drinking age in the United States is 21, and several wineries admit no one younger, children included.
  • San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento are the main airports.
  • Staying in Napa puts the southern wineries close by. St. Helena and Calistoga are better placed for the northern end.
