At a glance

  • Six cellar doors compared, with tastings from 15 to 20 Australian dollars
  • Primo Estate pours its complete range for 15 dollars, waived with any purchase
  • Wirra Wirra’s Shiraz Revolution: five Shiraz, a museum wine among them, for 80 dollars

  • Most entry tastings take about 45 minutes

How the visit runs

What to taste

  • Shiraz

Five of them, a museum wine included, with chocolates, in Wirra Wirra’s one-hour Shiraz Revolution, every day except Saturday at 11 am.

  • Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon

Poured with the flagship Shiraz on Wirra Wirra’s 35 dollar Flagship Tasting Menu.

  • Biodynamic wines

One of the three curated tastings of Wirra Wirra’s 15 dollar Cellar Door Wine Experience.

  • Whites, light and full-bodied reds

The five-wine progression of Hugh Hamilton’s hosted tasting, 20 dollars.

  • Bread, dukkah and olive oil

Served with whites and reds on Wirra Wirra’s Ironstone Cellars group tasting.

McLaren Vale winery visits are about the cellar door more than the guided tour: the six estates compared here pour tastings from 15 to 20 Australian dollars, and none sells a guided tour that a single adult can book on their own.

McLaren Vale winery visits: several labels in one flight

  • Three labels under one roof: Bec Hardy pours Bec Hardy, Pertaringa or Lot 94 BSR, five wines each, in about 30 minutes.
  • Three ranges in one flight: Serafino’s Discover Tasting mixes Vineyard Selection, Bellissimo and Black Label, five wines for 20 dollars.

Coriole, on Chaffeys Road, has welcomed visitors to its cellar door since 1970.

Old stone and family names

  • Coriole: the cellar door itself was built around 1850 of local ironstone and is heritage listed. The room is small and can get crowded.
  • Wirra Wirra: built in 1894 by a former state cricketer, rebuilt in the late 1960s by Greg Trott. Its cellar tours open the ironstone winery, Trott’s Cellar and a three-quarter-tonne Angelus Bell that visitors may ring.
  • Hugh Hamilton: presents itself as Australia’s oldest wine family, six generations over 185 years.
  • Bec Hardy: its Pertaringa label is 44 years old, and the estate speaks of 171 years of South Australian winemaking behind its range.
  • Primo Estate: a wine and olive oil tasting at the cellar door, with freshly baked bread and Italian cheese.
