Barossa Valley winery visits

Cellar door tastings at three Barossa Valley wineries, 50 to 60 minutes from Adelaide: 10 to 15 Australian dollars per adult, 30 to 45 minutes.

The Barossa Valley, 50 to 60 minutes by car north-east of Adelaide, is one of South Australia’s best-known wine regions, famous for its Shiraz. German-speaking settlers arrived in the 19th century, and their churches and villages still mark the landscape. Barossa Valley winery visits are inexpensive: at the three cellar doors compared here, a tasting costs 10 to 15 Australian dollars per adult.

How a cellar door tasting works

A cellar door is a winery’s tasting room. You book a slot, or walk in where that is allowed, and a host pours a flight of wines, explaining each one. In the Barossa these tastings are short, 30 to 45 minutes, which leaves time for several cellar doors in a day. No guided winery tour was found at these three, apart from the vineyard walk that opens Jacob’s Creek’s picnic package: here, the tasting is the visit.

Three cellar doors, three styles

Peter Lehmann Wines, on Para Road in Tanunda, runs its Introduction to the Barossa, a red and white flight led by its wine ambassadors, for 10 dollars per person in 45 minutes. It takes two to eight people. Larger groups contact the cellar door. At 10 dollars, it is the cheapest of the three, and a red and white flight suits a first visit.

Barossa Valley Estate, on Kraehe Road in Marananga, offers a seated tasting of two wines exclusive to its cellar door, a 2024 Grenache and a 2024 Malbec, for 15 dollars in 30 minutes. No booking is required. Two wines, both exclusive to the cellar door.

Jacob’s Creek lets you choose a flight at its visitor centre. The Light & Fresh flight of bubbly, zesty, fruity and sweet chilled wines costs 15 dollars, for 30 minutes. Tastings run every day, the last bookable slot is at 3:30 pm, booking is essential and guests must be 18 or over. Its Picnic Perfect package, a guided walk in the display vineyard, a tasting and a picnic platter, is sold for two people and listed apart in the table below.

Planning the day

Start at Peter Lehmann in Tanunda, then drive to Marananga for Barossa Valley Estate, and finish at Jacob’s Creek before its 3:30 pm last slot. The three tastings together cost 40 dollars per adult. Add lunch in Tanunda or one of the other valley towns, Nuriootpa or Angaston.

A car is the practical way around the valley. Plan for one person to skip the tastings, or book a tour from Adelaide. The legal drinking age in Australia is 18.

Barossa Valley winery visits: when to go

Harvest in the Barossa runs from late summer into autumn, roughly February to April. Weekends bring day-trippers from Adelaide, so book Jacob’s Creek ahead.

Where to stay

Tanunda sits in the middle of the valley, close to most cellar doors, and makes the easiest base for a night or two. Adelaide works for a day trip.
