Freyburger Winzerfest
Freyburg’s Winzerfest, which the tourist office calls central Germany’s largest regional wine festival, on the second weekend of September: Saale-Unstrut wine in the town centre. 2027 dates not yet out.
At a glance
- The largest regional wine festival of central Germany, says the tourist office
- Always on the second weekend of September, from Friday to Monday
- The town centre turns into a single wine bar
- Wines of the Saale-Unstrut, one of Germany’s northernmost wine regions
- Organised by the Weinbauverband Saale-Unstrut, the regional winegrowers’ association
How the festival runs
What to taste
Saale-Unstrut wine
The wine the festival is built on, poured by the region’s winemakers across the town centre.
Rotkäppchen Sekt
Freyburg’s sparkling wine. The Rotkäppchen Erlebniswelt is on the tourist office’s list of wine addresses.
Federweißer
Young, still-fermenting wine of the autumn, also the drink of the winemakers’ courtyard festivals until the end of September.
The Freyburger Winzerfest turns the whole centre of Freyburg into “einen einzigen Weinausschank”, a single wine bar, each autumn. The Freyburg tourist office calls it the largest regional wine festival of central Germany (Mitteldeutschland).
The festival of the Saale-Unstrut
“Von Freitag bis Montag kommen die Liebhaber des Saale-Unstrut-Weines voll auf ihre Kosten” (from Friday to Monday, lovers of Saale-Unstrut wine get their money’s worth), says the tourist office.
- The organiser: the Weinbauverband Saale-Unstrut, whose site has a Winzerfest section with a programme, an archive and exhibitor registration.
- The setting: the streets and squares of the old town, on the Unstrut.
- For everyone: an entertainment programme for young and old.
Rotkäppchen and the Straußwirtschaften
Freyburg is the home of Rotkäppchen, a Sekt house whose cellars are open to visitors as the Rotkäppchen Erlebniswelt.
The tourist office also lists the town’s wineries and its Straußwirtschaften, the seasonal taverns where winemakers pour their own wine.
The German Patent and Trade Mark Office tells how the Sekt house got its name.
- 1856: Moritz and Julius Kloss and their friend Carl Foerster found a wine trading company on 26 September.
- 1858: the first bottles made by the traditional Champagne method leave their cellars.
- 1895: after the Heidsieck champagne house wins its case over the name “Monopole”, the Freyburg firm names its Sekt after the red cap of its bottles, Rotkäppchen (Little Red Riding Hood), and applies for the word mark on 20 February.
