Baden-Württemberg is a state in south-west Germany, bordering France and Switzerland along the Rhine, with Lake Constance in the south and Stuttgart as its capital. It has two wine regions, Baden in the west and Württemberg around the Neckar valley. Württemberg is known for red wines such as Trollinger and Lemberger, alongside Riesling.

The food of the Württemberg side is Swabian: Maultaschen, pasta parcels filled with meat and spinach. Spätzle, soft egg noodles, often served with cheese and fried onions. And Zwiebelrostbraten, roast beef with onions.

The state’s festivals in this guide are both in Stuttgart. The Stuttgarter Weindorf is a wine festival in the city centre: the 2026 edition, the 50th, ran from 20 August to 5 September, and the 2027 dates had not been published on 6 October 2026. The Cannstatter Volksfest, a folk festival with eight large beer tents, follows on the Cannstatter Wasen: from 24 September to 10 October 2027.

Getting around

Stuttgart’s main station is a hub of the German rail network, with fast trains to Munich, Frankfurt and Mannheim, and the city’s airport is linked to the centre by the S-Bahn.
