Map of La Rioja

La Rioja is a small region of northern Spain, along the Ebro river, with Logroño as its capital. The Rioja wine appellation spreads beyond it, into Rioja Alavesa in the Basque province of Álava and into Navarre.

The bodegas in this guide sit on both sides of that line. In Haro, in La Rioja, Bodegas Muga and Bodegas Manzanos run guided tours with tasting for 30 and 35 euros. In Rioja Alavesa, Marqués de Riscal in Elciego charges 30 euros, and Eguren Ugarte, near Laguardia, 22 euros for a walk through its cave galleries with three wines. The three bodegas that publish a duration run their tours for 90 minutes to two hours. Bodegas Muga does not admit children under 12. Marqués de Riscal has child rates from age 3 and free entry under 2.

Getting around

Haro has a railway station. Logroño has a small airport, and Bilbao the nearest large one. The bodegas outside the towns are reached by car, with a driver who skips the tastings. Harvest, from late September into October, is the busiest season. In Logroño, the San Mateo festivities double as the Rioja grape harvest festival, with the treading of the grapes on the Paseo del Espolón: from 19 to 25 September in 2026.
