Food festivals in Spain, month by month
Spain’s wine region in this guide, for now, is Rioja, in the north of the country along the Ebro river. Its capital, Logroño, celebrates the grape harvest during its San Mateo festivities in September: from 19 to 25 September in 2026. Its red wines are made mainly from Tempranillo, and the labels Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva tell how long a wine has aged before release.
In Rioja, the usual visit is a guided tour of the bodega, the winery and its cellars, ending with a tasting. The four bodegas compared here charge 22 to 35 euros per adult. The three that publish a duration run 90 minutes to two hours. Bodegas Muga and Bodegas Manzanos, in Haro, both run tours in English as well as Spanish, and Marqués de Riscal, in Elciego, offers six languages: check the language of the time slot when you book. Two tours in one day cost 52 to 65 euros per adult.
In the cities, guided food tours walk the tapas bars: in Madrid’s old town for 69.99 to 89 euros per adult, and in Barcelona’s El Born and Barceloneta for 85 to 89.99 euros (October 2026). Each winter Madrid also hosts Madrid Fusión, the chefs’ congress at IFEMA, open to ticket holders: 1 to 3 February 2027, its 25th anniversary.
On the Mediterranean side, Buñol, west of Valencia, holds La Tomatina, the tomato battle, in late August: on 26 August in 2026, with an official ticket required.
Getting there
Bilbao has the nearest large international airport. Haro, the wine town of La Rioja, has a railway station. The bodegas outside the towns are reached by car.
