Map of Winchester
Winchester, in Hampshire, was the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and its medieval cathedral still dominates the centre. In 2027 the Foodies Festival stops here from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 July.
Practical notes
- Direct trains run from London Waterloo. Southampton Airport is a train ride to the south.
- The city centre is small and easy to walk.
On the tour
Winchester is the sixth stop, a week after Tatton Park. After it, the tour pauses for three weeks before Edinburgh.
What to see and eat in Winchester
The cathedral and the Great Hall of Winchester Castle, where a medieval round table long linked with the legend of King Arthur hangs on the wall, are the two landmarks of the centre. The River Itchen, a chalk stream, runs through the city and its water meadows. Hampshire is known for its watercress and its trout from these clear rivers, and the county has vineyards making English sparkling wine.
Where to stay
The centre has hotels and inns near the cathedral. Southampton, a train ride south, is the other base, with its airport.
