Around the festival

Winchester was the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and its medieval cathedral dominates the centre. The countryside around it is chalk-stream country: the River Itchen runs through the city, and Hampshire is known for its watercress and its trout. A walk along the Itchen and the water meadows is an easy break between two festival visits. In the Great Hall of Winchester Castle hangs a medieval round table, long linked with the legend of King Arthur.

Getting there

Direct trains run from London Waterloo, and Southampton Airport is a train ride south. The city centre is small and easy to walk. By car, the M3 motorway passes the city on its way from London to Southampton.

Where to stay

The centre has hotels and inns close to the cathedral, and the countryside around has village pubs with rooms. Southampton, to the south, is another base.

After a three-week pause, the tour heads north to Edinburgh (6 to 8 August 2027). A week earlier, Tatton Park in Cheshire hosts its stage, from 9 to 11 July.
