Map of Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, is built between the castle rock and the Firth of Forth, with the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town side by side. In 2027 the Foodies Festival stops here from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August.

Practical notes

  • Edinburgh Waverley station is in the centre. Edinburgh Airport, west of the city, is linked to it by tram.
  • August is festival month in Edinburgh, with the Fringe.

On the tour

Edinburgh is the seventh stop, after a three-week pause that follows Winchester. Glasgow hosts the following stage, from 13 to 15 August.

What to eat and drink in Edinburgh

Scotland’s classics are easy to find in the capital: haggis with neeps and tatties, smoked salmon, Cullen skink, the smoked haddock soup of the north-east coast, and single malt whisky in the bars of the Old Town. Leith, the old port north of the centre, has waterfront restaurants. The Royal Mile runs from the castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Whisky tastings

Three venues sell a whisky tasting, from 25 to 45 pounds per adult (October 2026):

  • The Scotch Whisky Experience, 354 Castlehill, on the Royal Mile.
  • The Lost Close, underground, with a storyteller.
  • Johnnie Walker Princes Street, six whiskies in an hour.

Where to stay

The Old Town and the New Town put you on foot from the main sights, and Leith is the quieter waterside option. Glasgow is an alternative base.
