Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region of mainland France, in the south-west, with Bordeaux as its capital. Its main wine country surrounds the city: the Bordeaux vineyards along the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and the Gironde estuary. Red Bordeaux is a blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, and harvest, in September and October, is the busiest time at the châteaux.

For a first visit, the châteaux on the edge of the city are the easiest to reach. In this guide, a tasting at Château Pape Clément starts at 15 euros, and guided tours with tasting cost 15 to 25 euros at Pape Clément, Château du Taillan and Château Malartic-Lagravière. In the city itself, the Cité du Vin, a museum of wine cultures, includes a glass at its Belvédère in the 23 euro ticket. Every two years, Bordeaux Fête le Vin brings winegrowers to the quays of the Garonne: from 7 to 11 July in 2027.

Inland, in the Dordogne, the Périgord is truffle country: the village of Sorges, north-east of Périgueux, holds its truffle festival, Truffes en Folie, in winter (28 January to 1 February in 2026).

In the Basque Country, the Fêtes de Bayonne fill the town centre for five days and nights in white and red, from 14 to 18 July 2027, with a farmers’ counter and special menus in the restaurants.

Getting there

High-speed TGV trains link Paris with Bordeaux Saint-Jean station, the fastest in just over two hours. Bordeaux also has an international airport at Mérignac, west of the city.
