Map of Naples

Naples is the capital of Campania, on the bay of the same name below Mount Vesuvius. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, still follows the street grid of the ancient Greek city: the Decumani, long parallel streets crossed by narrow lanes.

The city is the home of pizza, and its street food goes further: pizza fritta, the fried version, the cuoppo, a paper cone of fried seafood or vegetables, and pastries such as sfogliatella and babà. Three operators compared in this guide run street food tours in the centre. Do Eat Better Experience and Secret Food Tours both meet at Piazza Dante, Eating Europe at the Galleria Umberto I. Prices run from 65.95 to 79.99 euros per adult, for about three hours.

Practical notes

  • High-speed trains from Rome reach Napoli Centrale.
  • Metro line 1 stops at Dante, on the square where two of the tours meet.
  • Capodichino airport is north-east of the centre, linked by the Alibus shuttle.
  • In July 2026, the Pizza Village festival was held west of the city, on the seafront of Pozzuoli, reached by the Cumana railway or metro line 2.
