Porto sits on the north bank of the Douro river, near its mouth. Port wine takes its name from the city, but the port houses keep their cellars across the river, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Sandeman, Ferreira, Taylor’s, Cálem and Graham’s all welcome visitors there.
A cellar visit with a tasting of three ports costs 23 euros at Sandeman and Ferreira, for 50 minutes, and 25 euros at Taylor’s, where an audio-guided visit of about an hour is followed by 30 minutes of tasting. Cálem and Graham’s do not show a price on their pages.
Four guided food tours cost 70 to 89 euros per adult, for three to three and a half hours in the centre and Ribeira. Blue Dragon’s food and wine walk leaves at 11 am and 4 pm.
Practical notes
- The Dom Luís I bridge links Porto’s Ribeira district with the Gaia riverfront: walk across the lower deck, or take metro line D on the upper deck.
- Porto’s airport is on metro line E.
- The Douro Valley quintas, where the grapes grow, are a train ride upriver from São Bento or Campanhã stations.
