Map of Portugal

Portugal’s best-known fortified wine is port, made from grapes grown in the Douro Valley, in the north of the country. The first two experiences in this guide follow the wine from one end to the other.

In Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, the port houses open their cellars to visitors: a visit with a tasting of three ports costs 23 to 25 euros per adult. Sandeman and Ferreira pour a white, a ruby and a tawny. Taylor’s pours a white, a Late Bottled Vintage and a 10-Year-Old Tawny. Upriver, in the Douro Valley, the wine estates known as quintas run guided tours with tasting for 26 to 42 euros, in about 90 minutes.

A third experience is Porto’s food tours: four guided tours cost 70 to 89 euros per adult, for three to three and a half hours.

Getting there

Porto’s airport is linked to the city centre by metro. Trains run from Porto up the Douro Valley to Peso da Régua and Pinhão. From the stations, the quintas are a taxi ride away.
