Map of Norte

Norte is the northern region of mainland Portugal, with Porto as its main city. The Douro river crosses it from the Spanish border to the Atlantic, and the region holds both ends of the port wine chain: the vineyards of the Douro Valley upriver, and the port cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia at the river mouth.

Three experiences in this guide are in Norte. In Gaia, a cellar visit with three ports costs 23 to 25 euros per adult and lasts 50 to 90 minutes. In the Douro Valley, a guided tour with tasting at a quinta costs 26 to 42 euros and lasts about 90 minutes. Quinta do Crasto, one of them, takes groups of one to ten people aged 18 and over, with five wines. In Porto, four guided food tours cost 70 to 89 euros per adult, for three to three and a half hours.

Getting around

The Douro railway line runs from Porto up the valley through Peso da Régua to Pinhão. Driving between quintas means narrow, winding roads: plan a driver who skips the tastings.
