Why port has rules

The Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro was created on 10 September 1756, with the Douro Demarcated Region, which the port and Douro wine institute, the IVDP, considers the world’s first designation of origin. Vila Nova de Gaia grew as the entrepôt between the Douro and foreign markets, and UNESCO recognised the region as World Heritage in 2001.

A food tour and a port cellar in one day

  1. Morning: Blue Dragon’s 11 am departure, about three hours in the historic centre.
  2. Afternoon: across the Dom Luís I bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where Sandeman and Ferreira sell a 50-minute cellar visit with three ports for 23 euros.

Taste Porto’s Vintage & Port Wine Food Tour brings port into the food tour itself, for those with time for only one tour.
