Temecula, in south-western Riverside County, is Southern California’s wine country, inland between Los Angeles and San Diego. Its wineries stand east of the city, most of them along Rancho California Road, close enough together for Temecula Valley winery visits to take in several in an afternoon. At the four compared here, a tasting costs 30 to 35 dollars per adult, and a winery tour with tasting 40 dollars.

Six wines for 30 dollars

Two of the wineries compared here, Wilson Creek and Ponte, charge 30 dollars for six tastings.

  • Wilson Creek Winery & Vineyards, at 35960 Rancho California Road, pours six tastings for 30 dollars per person, every day. It takes no reservations: first come, first served. On a busy weekend, arrive early.
  • Ponte Winery, at 35053 Rancho California Road, charges the same, 30 dollars for six tastings. Its tasting rooms are for guests of 21 and over.
  • Halter Ranch, a Paso Robles estate, runs a tasting room at 41300 Ave Biona, where its Ranch Flight costs 35 dollars. It is a way to taste Central Coast wines without the drive north.

None of these wineries publishes how long a tasting or tour lasts.

A tour with a tasting

Callaway Vineyard and Winery, at 32720 Rancho California Road, sells two tours: Tour Only for 20 dollars, without wine, and Tour with Tasting for 40 dollars. Check in at the gift shop when you arrive. Callaway’s page does not price a tasting on its own, so the 40 dollar tour is the one way listed here to taste there. The tour suits visitors who want to see the winery before tasting. The 20 dollar Tour Only is an option for a driver or a non-drinker in the group.

The table below lists each winery’s offers.

Planning the visit

Rancho California Road makes for a simple itinerary: Callaway, Ponte and Wilson Creek are on the same road, with Halter Ranch’s tasting room on Ave Biona. Two or three tastings are plenty for one afternoon. Three tastings at Wilson Creek, Ponte and Halter Ranch cost 95 dollars per adult. Replacing one of them with Callaway’s tour adds 5 to 10 dollars.

There is no passenger train to Temecula. Drive, with someone who skips the tastings, or book a wine tour with transport. The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. San Diego and Ontario have the nearest large airports.
