Smorgasburg

New York’s open-air food market: hundreds of independent vendors in Williamsburg and Prospect Park, every weekend from April through October, according to Visit Brooklyn.

Smorgasburg is an open-air food market held every weekend in New York City during its season, bringing together, in its own words, “hundreds of independent food vendors, emerging chefs, and culinary innovators”. It launched in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2011, as an offshoot of the Brooklyn Flea market, and calls itself the largest weekly open-air food festival in the country. Visit Brooklyn, the borough’s tourism site, counts upwards of 10,000 visitors per day and describes a market “exceptionally popular with food tourists from all over the world”.

When and where

According to Visit Brooklyn, the season runs every Saturday and Sunday from April through October. In the 2026 season, the organiser listed these New York sites:

DaySiteHours
SaturdayMarsha P. Johnson State Park, 90 Kent Ave, Williamsburg11 am to 6 pm
SundayProspect Park, Breeze Hill (enter at Lincoln Road)11 am to 6 pm
Friday to SundayCentral Park, 36 Central Park Wnoon to 8 pm

A Friday market at the World Trade Center was shown as closed for the season when the page was read, on 29 September 2026. The sites and hours can change from one season to the next: the opening of the 2027 season had not been announced, so check the official site before you go. According to Visit Brooklyn, admission is free at the Brooklyn markets.

What to eat

The menu is whatever the stalls bring on the day. In the organiser’s words, the market gathers independent food vendors, emerging chefs and culinary innovators, so cuisines sit side by side.

Good to know

  • Pets. The Williamsburg site states “No Pets Allowed”.
  • Outdoors. The Brooklyn sites are open-air, in a waterfront park in Williamsburg and in Prospect Park.

Getting to Smorgasburg

Marsha P. Johnson State Park is on the Williamsburg waterfront, a walk from Bedford Avenue station on the L subway line, and the NYC Ferry stops in Williamsburg. Prospect Park is served by several subway lines along its edges. Lincoln Road is on its eastern side. Central Park West is on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Where to stay and budget

Williamsburg has hotels of its own, close to the Saturday market. Manhattan is a subway ride away from both Brooklyn sites. At the Brooklyn sites, with free entry, a market visit costs what you eat and drink.

Combine with

In October, the New York City Wine & Food Festival takes over the Seaport and Pier 17, in Lower Manhattan. In 2026 it ran from 15 to 18 October, within the Smorgasburg season. The guide also lists food tours in Chicago and New Orleans.
