Piedmont, in north-west Italy, is the region of Turin, of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato hills, and of the Alba white truffle, Tuber magnatum Pico. Truffle hunting in Italy, the practice of searching for truffles with a dog, is inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Two of the region’s food events are in this guide. The International Alba White Truffle Fair is held every weekend from 10 October to 6 December in 2026, with a truffle market, cooking shows, wine tastings and folklore events around the old town of Alba. In Bra, to the west, Cheese, the cheese event of Slow Food and the City of Bra, is held every two years in September: from 17 to 20 September in 2027.

When to go

The truffle harvest in Piedmont opens on 1 October and closes on 31 January, which is also when the local restaurants serve it fresh. October and November combine the fair with the first months of the harvest, and they are also the months when hotels in the Langhe fill up first. Alba is linked to Turin by the SFM4 regional train, and the nearest airports are Turin Caselle and Milan Malpensa.
