Douro Valley winery visits
Guided tours with tasting at three Douro Valley quintas, the wine estates upriver from Porto: 26 to 42 euros per adult, about 90 minutes.
The Douro Valley, upriver from Porto, is where the grapes for port and for the Douro’s still wines grow, on terraced slopes that drop steeply to the river. The wine estates are called quintas, and many of them open their doors to visitors, so Douro Valley winery visits mean a quinta, a guided tour and a tasting. The Alto Douro wine region is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
At the three quintas compared here, a guided tour with tasting costs 26 to 42 euros per adult (Crasto: 41.96 euros) and lasts about 90 minutes.
What a visit looks like
In the Douro the standard format is a guided walk through the estate, the vineyards and the winery, ending with a tasting. No tasting without the tour is priced in the sources read for this page: Quinta do Crasto does not sell one, and Quinta Nova’s page shows no price for one. Plan for the full visit, an hour and a half on site.
The tours differ in what ends up in the glass and in group size.
- Quinta da Pacheca has the lowest price, 26 euros, sold as a voucher on its own site. The tour starts and ends at the estate’s wine shop.
- Quinta do Crasto, at Gouvinhas in the municipality of Sabrosa, pours five wines with commentary, for groups of one to ten people aged 18 and over. Its Superior Tasting of five higher-end wines costs nearly twice as much.
- Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo builds its tour around wines from two terroirs, for groups of up to 25 with advance booking. A reserve wine tour costs more.
Every offer read on the quintas’ sites is in the table below, so you can compare the entry tour with the dearer formats.
Choosing a quinta
On a tight budget, Pacheca’s tour costs about 16 euros less than the other two. For a small group and five wines with commentary, choose Crasto. If you travel with teenagers, note that Crasto’s tour is for adults of 18 and over. Check the age rules of the other quintas before booking.
Douro Valley winery visits: when to go
Harvest in the Douro starts around September, when the estates are at their busiest and the valley at its liveliest. Book ahead at that time. Outside harvest, the terraces are still the main show, and the tours run with fewer people.
Getting there and getting around
Trains on the Douro line run from Porto up the river to Peso da Régua and on to Pinhão, a scenic ride that ends in the heart of the wine region. From the stations, the quintas are a taxi ride or a drive away. The roads between estates are narrow and winding: if you drive, one person should skip the tastings. Boat trips on the river, from Porto or from Régua, are another way to see the terraces.
Budget and where to stay
Two quinta tours in one day cost 68 to 84 euros per adult, before transport and lunch. Régua and Pinhão both make good bases for a night or two. Porto can serve as a base for a day trip. Check train times.
Combine with Porto
The other half of the port story is in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where the port houses age their wines in cellars open to visitors. Visiting both shows the wine from vineyard to cellar.
